BEAUBIEN JR. BESTS FIELD, CAPTURES 103RD CDGA AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP
GLENCOE, Ill – It was no secret Thursday at Lake Shore Country Club that Robert Beaubien, Jr. (Barrington / Biltmore CC) has countless family members and friends wishing nothing but the best for the 22-year-old and his golf career. Many of those closest to him were on-hand cheering him on as Beaubien, Jr. joined the long, impressive list of amateur golfers to have hoisted the Joseph G. Davis Trophy. Beaubien, Jr. defeated Danny Fisher (Lake Forest / Lake Bluff GC), 6 and 5, in the 36-hole Final match of the 103rd CDGA Amateur Championship to do so.

"It`s awesome," Beaubien, Jr. said after the win. "I really didn`t think I`d ever be in the position to say that I won this event, but it`s really cool to have won [it] and be able to add my name to the list of all of the people that have won the event. It`s pretty special, I`m pretty happy."

The support may have been what the rising fifth-year senior at Illinois Wesleyan needed, as the grueling four-day test of golf at Lake Shore is more than some can handle. Following 36 holes of stroke-play qualifying on Monday, Beaubien, Jr. and Fisher played three 18-hole matches between Tuesday and Wednesday before the two-loop finale on Thursday. Through it all, Beaubien, Jr. was seen smiling and chatting with numerous teammates and family members serving as caddies and top supporters.

FISHER, BEAUBIEN, JR. RIDE POSITIVE MINDSETS TO CDGA AM FINALS
GLENCOE, Ill – Previous CDGA Amateur appearances for Danny Fisher (Lake Forest / Lake Bluff GC) and Robert Beaubien, Jr. (Barrington / Biltmore CC) have ended in disappointment. Fisher fell in the Quarterfinals as the No. 1 seed last year, while Beaubien, Jr. didn’t make match play in his only attempt back in 2021.

The difference this year, where both advanced to the Championship Match following two victories on Wednesday at Lake Shore Country Club?

Fun.

“[Golf] is not a perfect game,” Fisher, who will be entering his fifth season at Miami Universty-Ohio in the fall, said. “I’m keeping my expectations pretty low and having fun with it. Trying to pull off some fun shots.”

“A lot has changed since the last time I played in this tournament,” said Beaubien, Jr., also a rising fifth-year senior, but at Illinois Wesleyan. “I’ve gotten a little more experience and learned a little more how to enjoy golf rather than just getting upset about it. You just have to go out there and have fun with it. That’s what I’ve been trying to do all week.”

TOP-SEEDED CERMAK CONTINUES CONSISTENT PLAY, HEADLINES 103RD CDGA AM QUARTERS AT HAZY LAKE SHORE
GLENCOE, Ill. – After successfully traversing Lake Shore Country Club twice on Monday, to the tune of dual 2-under 69s, top-seeded Joseph Cermak (Mount Prospect / Pine Meadow GC) backed up his consistent play Tuesday morning by beating No. 16 seed Adam Bornstein (Deerfield / Deerfield GC), 6 and 5. Cermak headlines the eight players advancing to Wednesday morning’s Quarterfinals of the 103rd CDGA Amateur Championship.

The Glencoe-based track provided another turbulent test Tuesday, as wind gusts wreaked havoc throughout the morning. Cermak, in the first match off with Bornstein, took a quick 3-up lead through three holes, with birdies on Nos. 1 and 3. Another red figure and hole win came on the par-4 fifth. The 38-year-old kept the gas pedal down at the turn, with wins and birdies on the par-5 ninth and par-4 10th helping to push his lead to 6 up. Despite a birdie win by Bornstein, a rising junior at Bryant University, on No. 12, Cermak silenced any hopes of a late comeback with an eagle on the par-5 13th to seal his 6-and-5 victory. With concessions, Cermak played his 13 holes around the par-71 layout in 8 under par.

The No. 1-seeded Cermak will square off against Colin Izzo (Chicago / Beverly CC) in the Quarterfinals, following Izzo’s 5-and-4 victory over Trevor Jay (Geneva / Cantigny Golf). Elsewhere, reigning champion Charlie Waddell’s bid (Kenilworth / Shoreacres) to become the first repeat CDGA Am winner since Joe Affrunti in 2000-01 fell short. He was bested by Michael Cascino (Palos Park / Olympia Fields CC), 5 and 4, as Cascino grabbed the lead with an eagle on the drivable on the par-4 third and never looked back, eventually closing out the triumph with a birdie on the par-3 14th.

With Waddell’s defeat, T.J. Barger (Bloomington / Bloomington CC) is the lone survivor from the 2022 CDGA Am semifinalists, as he cruised by Justin Schwab (Beach Park / CDGA Member’s Club), 7 and 6. The closest match of the day was the last to tee off, as Danny Fisher (Lake Forest / Lake Bluff GC) birdied the 19th hole of his match against Daniel Tanaka (Wilmette / Conway Farms GC) to secure his Quarterfinal spot.

Wednesday will feature two rounds, with the Quarterfinals set to tee off at 8 a.m. and the Semifinals to follow in the afternoon. The 36-hole Championship Match will take place on Thursday.

CERMAK EARNS MEDALIST HONORS, ROUND OF 16 SET IN 103RD CDGA AM
GLENCOE, Ill. – As if 36 holes of stroke-play qualifying didn’t provide enough difficulty, the field of the 103rd CDGA Amateur Championship was met with gusting winds and occasional showers at Lake Shore Country Club in Glencoe on Monday. Despite the tempestuous conditions, Joseph Cermak (Mount Prospect / Pine Meadow GC) was able to card a pair of 69s to earn medalist honors heading into Tuesday’s Round of 16 matches. Among those joining Cermak are defending champion Charlie Waddell (Kenilworth / Shoreacres) and 2022 stroke-play medalist Danny Fisher (Lake Forest / Lake Bluff GC).

Cermak’s morning round on Lake Shore’s par-71 layout featured two birdies (Nos. 4 and 13) offset with two bogeys (Nos. 5 and 8), with his 2-under total coming in the form of an eagle on the par-5 ninth. After a quick lunch, Cermak, starting on No. 10, kept the momentum going with birdies on Nos. 12, 13 and 17 to turn in 32. A lone blemish coming in, a bogey on the par-4 third, cemented another 69 and a 4-under finish overall.

The aforementioned Waddell finished at -2 following rounds of 69 and 71. Fisher, Tyler Isenhart (Geneva / Black Sheep) and Robert Beaubien, Jr. (Barrington / Biltmore CC) were the only others in red figures by day’s end, sitting at -1 overall. The top-seeded Cermak will square off against No. 16-seeded Adam Bornstein (Deerfield / Deerfield GC), who advanced as part of a four-for-three playoff late Monday evening.

Round of 16 matches will commence at 8 a.m. Tuesday morning, with the Quarterfinals and Semifinals slated for Wednesday. The 36-hole title tilt will be contested on Thursday.

The 110th season of amateur golf championships conducted by the CDGA heads to the North Shore this June for the 103rd CDGA Amateur Championship, June 26-29, at Lake Shore Country Club in Glencoe. Thirty-six holes of stroke play qualifying and a 16-golfer match play bracket await a field featuring 76 of the Chicago District's top golfers.

Championship Information

One of the oldest amateur competitions in the Midwest, the CDGA Amateur Championship was first played in 1914 at Ravisloe Country Club in Homewood. Golf great Charles “Chick” Evans, Jr. won the tournament that year. In 1935, invitations were issued nationally, and in 1941 the event became known as the Great Lakes Amateur Championship. In 1955 the CDGA board of directors decided to make the championship an association event again and to limit the field to players who were CDGA members. Currently the Championship is open to any CDGA member with a Handicap Index of 7.4 or under. Since 2003, qualifying golfers play 36 holes of stroke play on the first day of the championship. From there, 16 individuals advance to match play. The eight quarterfinalists from the previous year’s championship are exempt into the 36-hole qualifying. Charlie Waddell took home the hardware in 2022 at Glen Flora Country Club in Waukegan.
