24th Illinois State Mid-Amateur Championship
August 30-31 • Flossmoor Country Club

Todd Mitchell (-3) won his record fifth Illinois State Mid-Amateur Championship

Day 2: August 31, 2016

Mitchell Extends Record By Taking Fifth Title at 24th Illinois State Mid-Amateur
FLOSSMOOR, Ill. – Todd Mitchell finished 54 holes at 3-under par, gapping the field by two strokes to win the Illinois State Mid-Amateur Championship for a record fifth time. Defending champion Chadd Slutzky and Derek Meinhart, who held a share of the lead following each of the first two rounds, finished tied for second in the 24th edition of the event, contested at Flossmoor Country Club.

“I haven’t won it in a while, so I kind of forgot how it felt,” Mitchell said following the Championship. “It’s very nice, especially with the guys that were out here. Chadd (Slutzky) is a great player, Derek (Meinhart) is a great player. We battled a very tough day with the wind blowing, and I basically held on with both hands and got her in.”

It was the 38-year old Bloomington native’s fifth victory in the State Mid-Am, an event for amateur golfers over the age of 25 who are residents of Illinois. The most any other player has won the event is twice—a feat achieved by four golfers. In the state series of championships, Mitchell matches Jim Frisina, Sr. for the most victories in a single state amateur championship. Frisina won the Illinois State Amateur Championship a record five times between 1942 and 1958. Mitchell is a two-time Illinois State Amateur champ, winning in 2002 and 2003, making it is seven state championships overall for his career.

Round 2 Completion

Derek Meinhart maintained a share of the lead, closing out a second round 72 to sit at 3-under par heading into the final round of the 24th Illinois State Mid-Amateur Championship Wednesday morning at Flossmoor Country Club. The Mattoon native shares the lead with Axel Ochoa, a Chicagoan who carded 70-71 to make the final group. Defending champion Chadd Slutzky rounds out the final pairing, sitting one shot back in a tie for third with four-time champ Todd Mitchell.

The low 35 players made the 36-hole cut and advance to the final 18 holes. Play in the final round will begin at 12:30 p.m. off of the first and 10th tees, with the final trio of Meinhart, Ochoa and Slutzky teeing off the first hole at 1:20 p.m.

Day 1: August 30, 2016

Meinhart Leads Halfway Through Weather-Delayed State Mid-Am
Following a two-and-a-half-hour weather delay, half of the 24th Illinois State Mid-Amateur Championship was contested Tuesday at Flossmoor Country Club.

The 78-player field was only able to complete 27 holes each, rather than the 36 initially scheduled. The final nine holes of the second round will be contested Wednesday morning, before the low 35 and ties play the final 18-hole round Wednesday afternoon.

Mattoon’s Derek Meinhart enters the final day of play in the lead at -5 overall. The Mattoon native fired a 3-under 69 featuring an eagle and two birdies in Round 1, before tallying two birdies on the front nine in the evening. He will resume play at 8:15 a.m. on 10.

One shot behind in second is Axel Ochoa of Chicago. Ochoa birdied his final hole in the first round to post a 2-under 70, before getting to 4-under overall in the evening with three birdies and a bogey on the back nine. Ochoa will begin his final round on 1 at 9 a.m.

Defending champion Chadd Slutzky is T4 at even par, alongside four-time winner Todd Mitchell. Andrew Price, the 2014 champion and 2016 CDGA Amateur victor, is currently on the cut line at 8-over par.
