|ILLINOIS PGA PROFESSIONALS REPEAT, DEFEAT CDGA AMATEURS 11-7|
|Thursday, June 17, 2021 - RIVER GROVE, Ill. – The team of Illinois PGA Professionals claimed their second straight Radix Cup Thursday afternoon at Oak Park Country Club (OPCC), defeating the team of CDGA Amateurs, 11-7. The unique event, held annually to display the camaraderie present between the state’s top golfers, was played for the 59th time in 2021 after a COVID-necessitated hiatus in 2020.|
The teams of 12 competed in six best ball matches featuring Nassau scoring on a sparkling and sunny day at Oak Park, a 45-minute lightning delay not-withstanding. Despite a hot start on the opening holes from the Amateurs, the Professionals claimed each segment, taking 3.5 of a possible 6 points in both the Out and In matches, before closing out their defense with 4 points in the 18-hole tilts. The victory increases the Professionals’ all-time lead to 37-20-2 in the event, which was created by Illinois Golf Hall of Famer and Oak Park Country Club member Harry Radix in 1962 and carries on in his honor.
“I can’t give enough credit to our pros – they dug in deep on the finishing holes of the front nine to get back into it,” said team captain Chris Gumbach (River Forest CC). “Then on the back nine, they turned the matches in our favor, which led to the victory today.
I’ve been fortunate enough to be a part of six Radix Cups, two as a player and four as a captain,” Gumbach added. “This is an Oak Park event by an Oak Park member. It was his idea and it’s special that it’s lived on this long. I hope it never loses that.”
A spot is reserved on each team for the OPCC club champion and club professional, symbolizing the event’s close relationship to the Donald Ross design that dates back to 1914.
“It’s always a treat to have my fellow professionals out for this event and host some great amateur players out at Oak Park Country Club,” said host club professional Carson Solien (Oak Park CC), who teamed with Jim Billiter (Ivanhoe Club) to earn 2.5 points. “I’m lucky enough to be out here every day and see this course every day and the great membership. So, it’s fun to have the guys out here and let them see how great it is here.”
“It’s a fun thing for us,” said OPCC club champion Michael McCormick (Chicago / Oak Park CC), who partnered with Brian Hickey (Burr Ridge / Edgewood Valley CC) to claim 1.5 points in his Radix Cup debut. “We’re proud to have it every year. You see a lot of members coming out and watching. It’s one of those things to count on. We don’t have a tour event or anything, but it’s a nice thing to count on, get some good players out and get a little bit of exposure for the course.
Pacing the CDGA Amateur team in defeat was the Mid-American Conference duo of Jordan Less (Elmhurst / Rich Harvest Farms) and Charlie Nikitas (Glenview / Merit Club). Both All-MAC performers at Northern Illinois and Miami (Ohio), respectively, Less and Nikitas earned 2.5 of a possible 3 points from their match. Playing in his first Radix Cup, Nikitas appreciated the ability to team up with someone who is normally his adversary.
“Having Jordan as my partner made it more comfortable for me,” Nikitas said. “It was nice having him on my team – we’re usually playing college events against each other.
“It was just an awesome day.”
The 2021 CDGA Championship schedule continues next week, with the 101st CDGA Amateur Championship slated for June 21-24 at Bull Valley Golf Club. The IPGA tournament slate turns to a Stroke Play event at The Hawk Country Club on June 21, with the next championship being the Illinois Senior Open June 28-29 at Royal Fox Country Club.
