2021 CHAMPIONSHIP SLATE BEGINS WITH 6TH CDGA MID-AMATEUR

Friday, May 14, 2021 -

LEMONT, Ill. – Back after a cancelation in 2020, the 6th CDGA Mid-Amateur Championship is set to kickoff the Association’s 108th season of tournament golf May 17-19 at Lake Shore Country Club in Glencoe.

A field of 80 amateurs age 25 and older return to Lake Shore just five years removed from the 2nd CDGA Mid-Amateur Championship in 2016, in which Kyle Nathan defeated Matthew Mclaughlin 3 & 2 in the Championship Match.

FORMAT

The entire field will play 18 holes of stroke play the morning of Monday, May 17, with the low 16 advancing to match play. The first round of matches will be contested Monday afternoon, with the Quarterfinals and Semifinals occurring on Tuesday, May 18. A champion will be crowned following the Championship Match the morning of Wednesday, May 19.

ABOUT THE FIELD

Registration was open to all CDGA members age 25 and older with a USGA Handicap Index® of 7.4 or below. More than 340 individuals signed up for the event, with exemptions and a tournament-record four qualifiers earlier this spring at Maple Meadows Golf Club, Palatine Hills Golf Course, Kankakee Elks Country Club and Sunset Valley Golf Club determining the final field.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

John Ehrgott (Edwards / Mt. Hawley CC) is a two-time champion of this event in 2015 and 2018 with victories at Bowes Creek Country Club and Hinsdale Golf Club, respectively. He also holds two Illinois State Mid-Amateur titles (2007 and 2009).

Jake Erickson (Springfield / Panther Creek CC) is the defending CDGA Mid-Amateur champion following a 3-and-2 defeat of Zach Jecklin at Northmoor Country Club in 2019. Erickson also has runner-up finishes in the Illinois State Amateur and Illinois State Mid-Amateur Championships.

John Ramsey (Glenview / North Shore CC) is the reigning Illinois State Mid-Amateur champion following his one-shot defeat of John Ehrgott at Edgewood Valley Country Club last summer. He also has two CDGA Amateur Four-Ball titles alongside Chadd Slutzky (2017 and 2020).

Steve Sawtell (Northfield / Merit Club) is a two-time CDGA Amateur and CDGA Amateur Four-Ball champion. He has made match play in three CDGA Mid-Ams, advancing as far as the Quarterfinals.

Chadd Slutzky (Deer Park / Royal Fox CC), the 2017 CDGA Mid-Am champion at Mistwood Golf Club, enters the event as the reigning CDGA Amateur Four-Ball champion alongside Ramsey, their second title as a duo. Slutzky is also a two-time champion of the Illinois State Mid-Amateur Championship (2015 and 2019).

OTHERS TO WATCH

Greg Bauman (Crystal Lake / Biltmore CC) is the 2017 Illinois State Mid-Amateur champion, finishing four shots clear of the field at Exmoor Country Club.

Grant Goltz (Dekalb / Black Sheep GC) earned medalist honors by one stroke at the Kankakee Elks Country Club qualifier with a 1-under 71.

Brian Hickey (Burr Ridge / Edgewood Valley CC) has reached match play in each of the last three CDGA Mid-Amateur Championships, finishing as high as runner up in 2017.

Zach Jecklin (Glen Ellyn / Butterfield CC) returns to the event following a runner-up finish to Erickson in the event’s most recent edition in 2019.

Ryan Kowalski (Arlington Heights / Mt. Prospect GC) earned medalist honors by two strokes at the Palatine Hills Golf Course qualifier with a 2-under 70.

Derek Leeney (Chicago / CDGA Member’s Club), Kyle Martin (Wheaton / Black Sheep GC) and Keegan O’Rahilly (Aurora / St. Charles CC) each earned co-medalist honors by one stroke at the Maple Meadows Golf Club qualifier with a 1-over 71.

Michael Natale (Burr Ridge / Edgewood Valley CC) earned medalist honors by one stroke at the Sunset Valley Golf Club qualifier with a 5-under 67.

Graham O’Connor-Brooks (Lake Forest / Glen Flora CC) will be participating in this month’s U.S. Amateur Four-Ball Championship at Chambers Bay alongside Danny Fisher following a medalist finish in a qualifier last fall.

LAKE SHORE COUNTRY CLUB

Home to nearly 10,000 annual rounds of golf, Lake Shore Country Club is situated just steps away from the shores of Lake Michigan. The course, which opened in 1908, has been influenced by some of golf’s most renowned architects in the likes of Frederick Law Olmsted, Jr., Tom Bendelow, Donald Ross and Ron Prichard.

Playing at 6,775 yards and to a par of 71 for the Championship, the layout will prove to be a tough test once again as it did five years ago when the CDGA last hosted a tournament at the Glencoe track. Just two players finished in red figures during the stroke play portion of the 2016 CDGA Mid-Amateur.
