102ND CDGA AMATEUR HEADS NORTH TO GLEN FLORA COUNTRY CLUB

Friday, June 24, 2022 -

LEMONT, Ill. - For the first time since the 21st Illinois State Senior Amateur Championship in 2007, the CDGA`s championship slate is headed to Waukegan`s Glen Flora Country Club for the 102nd playing of the CDGA Amateur Championship, June 27-30. The CDGA Am, the CDGA`s eldest competition, is making its second appearance at Glen Flora, as the club also hosted in 1953.

The eventual victor of this four-day championship will have his name engraved on the Joseph G. Davis Trophy, alongside the likes of golf legends Chick Evans, Robert A. Gardner, Frank Stranahan and Joel Hirsch.

FORMAT

The entire field will play 36 holes of stroke play on Monday, June 27, with tee times starting at 7:30 a.m. and the low 16 advancing to match play. Round of 16 matches are scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, with Quarterfinal and Semifinal matches throughout the day on Wednesday, June 29. A 36-hole Championship match is set for 8:00 a.m. Thursday, June 30 to determine the winner.

ABOUT THE FIELD

Registration was open to all CDGA members with a Handicap Index® from the USGA® of 7.4 or below. Nearly 300 individuals signed up for the event, with exemptions and four qualifiers earlier this year at Palatine Hills Golf Course, Ironwood Golf Course, Briar Ridge Country Club and Oak Grove Golf Course determining the final field of 75.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Cameron Karney (Crystal Lake / Crystal Lake CC) advanced to the Semifinals in the 2021 CDGA Amateur Championship at Bull Valley Golf Club. The 22-year-old paced the Western Illinois men`s golf team with a season average of 74.42 as a senior in 2021-22, including a medalist finish at the Panther Relays Spring Invitational.

Graham O`Connor Brooks (Libertyville / Glen Flora CC) has called Glen Flora Country Club home since the start of the 2018 season. O`Connor Brooks qualified for the 2021 U.S. Amateur Four-Ball Championship with Danny Fisher in 2021 and reached the Round of 16 in the 2019 CDGA Mid-Amateur Championship.

John Ramsey (Glenview / Glenview Park GC) is the champion of three CDGA-administered events, including a solo title in the 2020 Illinois State Mid-Amateur Championship following his one-shot defeat of John Ehrgott at Edgewood Valley Country Club. He also has two CDGA Amateur Four-Ball titles alongside Chadd Slutzky (2017 and 2020).

Chadd Slutzky (Deer Park / Royal Fox CC) is a CDGA mid-amateur stalwart, having won the Illinois State Mid-Amateur Championship twice (2015 and `19) and the CDGA Mid-Amateur Championship once (2017). Slutzky has also collected a pair of CDGA Amateur Four-Ball Championships with Ramsey in 2017 and `20.

Nick Tenuta (Mt. Prospect / Mt. Prospect GC) is the defending champion of the event following his 5-and-4 defeat of Brett Tomfohrde at Bull Valley Golf Club in 2021. Tenuta followed up his win with a strong T6 finish in the 90th Illinois State Amateur Championship at Mistwood Golf Club a year ago.

Brett Tomfohrde (Chicago / Butterfield CC) finished as the runner-up in the 101st CDGA Amateur Championship at Bull Valley last summer. Since then, Tomfohrde has finished T6 in the 2021 Illinois State Mid-Amateur Championship, reached the Round of 16 in the 2022 CDGA Mid-Amateur Championship and teamed with Slutzky to take three points for Team CDGA in the 2022 Radix Cup.

Charlie Waddell (Chicago / Shoreacres) has participated in 11 USGA-sanctioned championships, including six U.S. Amateurs, three U.S. Mid-Amateurs and two U.S. Amateur Four-Balls. Along with his U.S. Am and U.S. Mid-Am qualifications in 2021, Waddell also reached the Quarterfinals in the CDGA`s equivalent events last year.

OTHERS TO WATCH

Brien Davis (Peoria / Peoria Park District) earned medalist honors at the Ironwood G.C. qualifier by firing a 3-under 69.

GLEN FLORA COUNTRY CLUB

Established in 1900 and designed by Austie Clayssens, Glen Flora is a classic design from golf`s golden age that has withstood the test of time. Known for its difficult greens and unique design, classic oak trees frame many of its holes, while a natural ravine carves through the entire property.

Glen Flora has been known to host major events in the past, with none other than the three-man, 36-hole competition between Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player in 1963 rightfully the most memorable. It has also played host to the CDGA Amateur Championship once before, with Robert W. Cleveland claiming the Joseph G. Davis Trophy in 1953. For the 2022 iteration, Glen Flora will play at a par 70, with the course stretching to more than 6,400 yards.

2021 CDGA AMATEUR

Defending champion and recent University of Louisville graduate Nick Tenuta is set to return to the CDGA Amateur field after his 5-and-4 defeat of Brett Tomfohrde in last year`s Final. Tenuta notched 10 birdies in the 32 holes the duo played en route to a wire-to-wire victory. The now 23-year-old built up a lead to as large as 6 up after just 16 holes before playing nearly level with Tomfohrde down the closing stretch.

Tenuta recently completed his college career at Louisville and is set to also compete in the Illinois State Amateur July 19-21 at Westmoreland Country Club. A regular among the top of the mid-amateur circuit in the Chicago District, Tomfohrde recently competed in the CDGA Mid-Amateur and is slated to return to the Illinois State Mid-Am after his T-6 finish a year ago.
