TANDEMS TO TAKE ON FLOSSMOOR GOLF CLUB IN 6TH CDGA AMATEUR FOUR-BALL

Friday, August 6, 2021 - LEMONT, Ill. -  The first of two team events on the 2021 CDGA Championship schedule gets under way with the playing of the 6th CDGA Amateur Four-Ball Championship, Aug. 9-11 at Flossmoor Golf Club. The historic south suburban club welcomes its eighth CDGA-administered championship and first since 2016.

FORMAT

Forty six duos will compete in 18 holes of stroke-play qualifying on Monday, Aug. 9 to determine the low 16 teams for match play. The Round of 16 and Quarterfinal matches will take place on Tuesday, Aug. 10, with the Semifinal and Championship matches following on Wednesday, Aug. 11.

The event debuted in 2016 and was created to emulate the exceedingly popular U.S. Amateur Four-Ball Championship. Each competitor plays their own ball, with the lowest gross score from each hole counting as the team’s score.

ABOUT THE FIELD

Ninety three pairs attempted to qualify for the championship via two qualifiers at Heritage Bluffs Public Golf Club and Blackstone Golf Club last month, while six teams were exempt into the championship proper. Registration was open to any CDGA member with an official USGA Handicap Index® not exceeding 10.4.

Teams to Watch

Steve Sawtell (Northfield / Merit Club) and Michael Natale (Burr Ridge / Edgewood Valley CC) have advanced to match play in four of the event’s five iterations, having captured titles in both 2016 and 2018. Sawtell has also claimed two CDGA Amateur Championships (2004, 2009).

Chadd Slutzky (Deer Park / Royal Fox CC) and John Ramsey (Glenview / North Shore CC) come in as the defending champions, after adding to their 2017 crowns by winning the 5th CDGA Amateur Four-Ball Championship last July at Skokie Country Club. Slutzky is a two-time Illinois State Mid-Amateur champion (2015, 2019), and Ramsey is the defending Illinois State Mid-Amateur victor following his title last summer at Edgewood Valley CC.

Scott Dunsire, Jr. (New Buffalo, Michigan / Medinah CC) and Tommy Dunsire (Naperville / Medinah CC) captured the 2019 CDGA Amateur Four-Ball Championship at Oak Park Country Club. Tommy earned Academic All-MAC honors following his junior season on the Northern Illinois men’s golf team, while Scott played collegiately at Michigan State before joining his brother at NIU for his senior season in 2019-20.

Ethan Farnam (Crystal Lake / Crystal Lake CC) and Michael Fastert (Wheeling / Sanctuary GC) are a pairing featuring the reigning Illinois State Amateur champion Farnam, who won his second consecutive Louis L. Emmerson trophy last month at Mistwood Golf Club. Fastert has advanced to match play in this event twice before and was runner up in the 2017 CDGA Amateur Championship.

Others to Watch

Brian Hickey (Burr Ridge / Edgewood Valley CC) and Ryan Neill (Downers Grove / Butterfield CC) finished as runner up in the 2018 CDGA Amateur Four-Ball at Mistwood, falling to Steve Sawtell and Michael Natale. The duo has advanced to the Quarterfinals three times (2017, 2018, 2020).

Andrew Vitt (Lake Forest / Exmoor CC) and Nick Smith (Chicago / Exmoor CC) finished as runner up to winners Chadd Slutzky and John Ramsey in the 5th CDGA Amateur Four-Ball Championship last summer at Skokie.

Mac McClear (Hinsdale / Hinsdale GC) and Josh Lundmark (Hinsdale / Edgewood Valley CC) tied for medalist honors at -6 in the Heritage Bluffs qualifier on July 15. Lundmark is a rising junior at Cornell, while McClear, the Big Ten individual champion from Iowa, lost in a three-man playoff in the Illinois State Amateur last month.

Blair Skarin (Winfield / Cantigny Golf) and Erik Ciotti (Winfield / Cantigny Golf) tied for medalist honors at -6 in the Heritage Bluffs qualifier on July 15. Ciotti captured the 1997 Illinois State Amateur at Bloomington CC.

Bradley Rendell (Chicago / North Shore CC) and Brett Tomfohrde (Chicago / Butterfield CC) tied for medalist honors at -6 in the Heritage Bluffs qualifier on July 15. Tomohrde finished as runner up in the 101st CDGA Amateur in June.

Mark Esposito (Elgin / Blackberry Oaks) and Vance Antoniou (North Barrington / Butler National) have three individual and Illinois State championship titles among them. Antoniou captured the 2016 CDGA Senior Amateur, while Esposito won the 1999 and 2006 Illinois State Mid-Amateur. As a duo, the two advanced to the 2016 U.S. Amateur Four-Ball Semifinals, and finished runner up in the 2019 CDGA Senior Four-Ball.

John Stillman (Oak Lawn / Crystal Tree G&CC) and Bobby Findlay (Lemont / Crystal Tree G&CC) tied for medalist honors at -6 in the Heritage Bluffs qualifier on July 15.

FLOSSMOOR GOLF CLUB

Formerly known as Flossmoor Country Club, the track was originally designed by Herbert J. Tweedie, whose other works in the Chicago District include Exmoor Country Club, Glen View Club and Park Ridge Country Club, in 1899. It has since been tweaked by the likes of William Watson, Harry Collis and, most recently, Ray Hearn. Part of the “Five Sisters” clubs within a three-mile stretch along the Illinois Central Railroad track (Calumet, Ravisloe, Idlewild, Olympia Fields and Flossmoor), the course played host to the 1920 PGA Championship and 1923 U.S. Amateur.

Flossmoor has also hosted numerous CDGA-administered championships, including the CDGA Amateur twice in 1924 and 1963, and the Illinois State Mid-Amateur from 2011 to 2016. Famed golfer Bobby Jones long held the course record of 66, with his round including eight consecutive 3s. For the championship, the course will play at 6,764 yards and to a par 72.

LAST YEAR’S CHAMPIONSHIP

In the first event of the 2020 CDGA tournament season (due to the coronavirus pandemic), the duo of Chadd Slutzky and John Ramsey were just happy to get back to tournament golf together when they competed in the 5th CDGA Amateur Four-Ball Championship at Skokie Country Club. The pair eventually advanced to the championship match, where they squared off against Andrew Vitt and Nick Smith. Vitt and Smith took a 3-up lead through 12 holes, before the 2017 champions mounted a comeback by winning holes 14, 16 and 17 to tie the match. It would stay knotted up until Slutzky and Ramsey won the 20th hole to secure their second title.
