|ILLINOIS’ BEST MID-AMS MAKE WAY TO BLOOMINGTON CC|
|Friday, August 20, 2021 - |
LEMONT, Ill. - The state’s top golfers age 25 and older will descend upon Central Illinois for the 29th Illinois State Mid-Amateur Championship, Aug. 23-24 at Bloomington Country Club. The second of three CDGA-administered state championships in 2021 heads to a familiar site throughout the years, with the club having hosted eight State Amateurs and one State Senior Am.
The 54-hole event begins with a trying 36 holes on Monday. The low 35 and ties will then advance to the final 18-hole round on Tuesday to crown a champion.
ABOUT THE FIELD
The field of 78 players was determined by exemptions and three qualifiers at Village Greens of Woodridge, Red Tail Run Golf Club and Balmoral Woods Country Club in late July and early August. A total of 23 players were exempt, with 208 players attempting to qualify for the Championship. Registration was open to any Illinois resident with an official USGA Handicap Index® not exceeding 7.4 and who will reach their 25th birthday on or before the start of the event.
PLAYERS TO WATCH
John Ehrgott (Edwards) is a two-time Illinois State Mid-Amateur champion (2007 and 2009) and finished as runner up to John Ramsey in this event last August. Ehrgott has also claimed two CDGA Mid-Amateur titles (2015 and 2018) and has advanced to match play in the U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship five times.
Jake Erickson (Springfield) is the 2019 CDGA Mid-Amateur champion, and finished as runner up in the 2017 Illinois State Mid-Amateur. Erickson has finished in the top 12 of the Illinois State Amateur five of the last eight years.
Tom Kearfott (El Paso) is a prior state champion, having captured the 2017 Illinois State Senior Championship at Senica’s Oak Ridge. In the CDGA Senior Amateur Four-Ball’s five-year history, Kearfott and partner Tim Sheppard have won three times (2016, 2018, 2020).
Todd Mitchell (Bloomington) holds the record for most Illinois State Mid-Amateur titles with five victories (2008, 2010, 2011, 2013 and 2016). Mitchell, who won back-to-back Illinois State Amateurs in 2002 and 2003, partnered with Scott Harvey of North Carolina to win the 2019 U.S. Amateur Four-Ball at Bandon Dunes.
John Ramsey (Glenview) is the defending Illinois State Mid-Amateur champion following his triumph last August at Edgewood Valley Country Club. Ramsey has also claimed two CDGA Amateur Four-Ball Championships alongside partner Chadd Slutzky (2017 and 2020).
Tim Sheppard (East Peoria) enters as the defending champion in all three CDGA-administered senior championships (CDGA Senior Amateur, Illinois State Senior Amateur and CDGA Senior Amateur Four-Ball). In total, the two-time CDGA Senior Player of the Year (2018 and 2019) has won two CDGA Senior Amateurs (2019 and 2021), two Illinois State Senior Amateurs (2018 and 2020) and three CDGA Amater Four-Ball Championships (2016, 2018, 2020) alongside Tom Kearfott.
Chadd Slutzky (Deer Park) has won the Illinois State Mid-Amateur twice, with wins in 2015 and 2019. Additionally, Slutzky captured the 2017 CDGA Mid-Amateur and two CDGA Amateur Four-Ball Championships in 2017 and 2020, with partner John Ramsey.
Logan Stauffer (Bloomington) emerged victorious in the 2018 Illinois State Mid-Amateur Championship at Glen Oak Country Club. Stauffer finished in a tie for 16th last year at Edgewood Valley.
OTHERS TO WATCH
Larry Blatt (Chicago), a former University of Illinois golfer, finished as the low mid-amateur (T12) in last month’s 90th Illinois State Amateur Championship at Mistwood Golf Club.
Brian Hickey (Burr Ridge), the 2017 CDGA Mid-Amateur runner up, finished in the top-10 of the 2020 Illinois State Mid-Amateur Championship at his home club last August.
Zach Jecklin (Glen Ellyn), the 2019 CDGA Mid-Amateur runner up, advanced to the Round of 16 matches of the U.S. Amateur Four-Ball Championship in May, alongside partner Dan Gratton.
David Keenan (Champaign) finished as runner up in the 6th CDGA Mid-Amateur Championship at Lake Shore Country Club in May, falling to champion Ryan Kowalski, 3 and 2.
Stino Milito (Park Ridge) qualified for the 2021 U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship at Glen Flora Country Club on Aug. 16 after carding a 3-under 67.
Brett Tomfohrde (Chicago) finished as runner up in the 101st CDGA Amateur Championship at Bull Valley Golf Club in June, falling to champion Nick Tenuta in the Championship match, 5 and 4.
John Wright (Aurora) earned medalist honors after carding a 2-under 70 at the Balmoral Woods Country Club qualifier on Aug. 5.
Brian Zimmerman (Normal) earned medalist honors after firing a 5-under 67 at the Red Tail Run Golf Club qualifier on July 28.
BLOOMINGTON COUNTRY CLUB
As previously stated, Bloomington Country Club has become a normal host site on the CDGA tournament slate throughout the club’s 125-year history. The William Langford-designed track has hosted the Illinois State Amateur a record eight times, most recently in 2018. It also hosted the Illinois State Senior Amateur in 2016. The Illinois State Women’s Amateur has visited Bloomington CC five times, most recently in 1989, and the Illinois Open was contested there in 1980.
The well-manicured course measures just over 6,500 yards and plays to a par 71 (36-35). Recently-renovated bunkers and tree-lined fairways will require accuracy off the tee as golfers will play to smaller, but slick greens.
LAST YEAR’S CHAMPIONSHIP
John Ramsey, a two-time winner of the CDGA Amateur Four-Ball Championship alongside Chadd Slutzky in 2017 and 2020, emerged victorious in his first solo win by capturing the 28th Illinois State Mid-Amateur Championship last August at Edgewood Valley Country Club in La Grange. The 40-year-old navigated quick greens and outdueled fellow stalwart and two-time Illinois State Mid-Amateur champion John Ehrgott to win by a shot, finishing the 54-hole event at -2.
