|2021 CHAMPIONSHIP SLATE CONCLUDES WITH CDGA SENIOR AMATEUR FOUR-BALL|
|Friday, September 24, 2021 - |
LEMONT, Ill. – The CDGA’s championship slate returned in full for 2021 and the 6th CDGA Senior Amateur Four-Ball Championship is set to conclude the schedule when the top 55-and-older duos embark on Ravinia Green Country Club in Riverwoods Sept. 27-30.
The championship begins with 18 holes of stroke play on Monday, Sept. 27 to determine the low 16 teams that will advance to the match-play bracket. Match play gets underway with the Round of 16 on Tuesday morning. Quarterfinal and Semifinal matches are slated for Wednesday, with the Championship match taking place on Thursday morning.
Designed to emulate the U.S. Amateur Four-Ball Championship, each golfer plays their own ball. The low gross score on each hole counts as a team’s score.
ABOUT THE FIELD
There were no qualifiers held for this event, with the field consisting of 44 pairs. Eligibility was open to any CDGA member with a current USGA Handicap Index® not exceeding 10.4 and who has reached their 55th birthday on or before the start of the event. Partners are not required to be from the same club.
PLAYERS TO WATCH
David Feder (Lincolnshire / Conway Farms GC) and Guy Lay (Northbrook / Bob O’Link GC) advanced to the Quarterfinal round together in the 2018 and 2019 CDGA Senior Amateur Four-Ball Championships. Feder recently bested the field in the 35th Illinois State Senior Am at The Preserve at Oak Meadows after finishing third in 2020.
Brad Kay (Arlington Heights / Ivanhoe Club) and Brien Gerber (Bolingbrook / Bolingbrook GC) won the 2019 playing of this event at Calumet Country Club. Kay was also the champion of the 2018 CDGA Senior Amateur Championship at Itasca Country Club.
Dave Ryan (Taylorville / Illini CC) and Todd Creviston (North Barrington / The Club at Wynstone) are playing together in a CDGA Senior Amateur Four-Ball Championship for the first time. Ryan brings a wealth of success into the event, as he has captured seven CDGA Senior Player of the Year titles, four Illinois State Senior Amateur crowns, two CDGA Senior Amateur Championships and the 2016 U.S. Senior Amateur Championship at Old Warson Country Club in St. Louis, Missouri.
Tim Sheppard (East Peoria / Pekin CC) and Tom Kearfott (El Paso / El Paso GC) are three-time victors of the event, having won the 2016, 2018 and 2020 iterations. Both players have had success individually, as well, as Sheppard has claimed both the Illinois State Senior Amateur and CDGA Senior Amateur titles twice, while Kearfott hoisted the Earl R. Liff Trophy following the 2017 Illinois State Senior Am.
Brian Silvers (Byron / Mauh Nah Tee See CC) and John Finnin (Frankfort / Olympia Fields CC) are another first-time pairing in the event, as Silvers is making his CDGA Senior Amateur Four-Ball debut in just his third year of eligibility. Finnin was the champion of the event’s 2017 playing at Itasca Country Club alongside Terry Werner.

Mark Hannon (Bolingbrook / Bolingbrook GC) and Ed Grom (Naperville / Bolingbrook GC) qualified for match play together in 2018 at Indian Hill Club after Hannon reached the Quarterfinal round a year prior.
Steven Jacobs (Highland Park / Pine Meadow GC) and Matthew Horwitch (Northbrook / Merit Club) also made it to the Semifinals last year at Aurora Country Club by defeating the Esposito/Antoniou and Scott/Maatman, Jr. duos.
Jeff Ott (Dunlap / Coyote Creek GC) and Jeff Polonus (Peoria / Peoria Park District) reached the Quarterfinal round of play in 2020 with a 4-and-3 win in the Round of 16.
Ted Pecora (Winnetka / Bob O’Link GC) and Ron Waytula, Jr. (McHenry / McHenry CC) are back for their second-consecutive CDGA Senior Amateur Four-Ball together. Cory Scott (Galesburg / Soangetaha CC) and Jerry Maatman, Jr. (Winnetka / Chicago GC) earned medalist honors during the stroke-play round last year after carding five birdies en route to a 2-under 70.
Ted Zurkowski (Chicago / Kemper Lakes CC) and Edward Mular (Schaumburg / Prairie Isle GC) are a pair of super seniors making a splash in 2021, with Zurkowski earning low super senior honors at the Illinois State Senior Am and Mular finishing as the overall gross winner at the CDGA Super Senior Championship earlier this month.

LAST YEAR’S CHAMPIONSHIP
Tim Sheppard and Tom Kearfott hoisted the CDGA Senior Amateur Four-Ball trophy for a third time during the event’s fifth playing at Aurora Country Club in 2020. The duo got out to an early lead in the Championship Match, winning the first hole and maintaining a 1-up advantage for much of the opening nine, before a pair of birdies from Mike Karney and Mike Mcloone at Nos. 7 and 8 flipped the script. Sheppard and Kearfott responded with winning scores at 12, 13 and 14 to gain the 2-up advantage they would eventually win with.
