LEMONT, Ill. - Following a season that contained an abundance of uncertainty, the CDGA is hopeful for a full return to championship play in 2021.

After the cancellation of the first four championships on its 2020 docket, the CDGA, along with the help of other allied associations, worked on a return to play plan upon approval to do so from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO). With the safety of all participants at the forefront of every decision, events returned July 8.

“We were very thankful to have the opportunity to safely conduct four of our championships in 2020,” said Nick Scillia, the CDGA’s director of rules & competitions. “It was tough having to cancel what we did last year, but we are hopeful that the guidelines put in place will bring a full 2021 season.”

That 2021 season is scheduled to consist of eight gross championships and 21 USGA qualifiers in what will be the 108th running of championship golf for the CDGA. Registration for these events will open on Tuesday, Jan. 19.

Highlighting the schedule are the association’s premier events, headlined by the 90th Illinois State Amateur Championship on July 20-22 at Mistwood Golf Club and the 101st CDGA Amateur Championship which is slated for June 21-24 at Bull Valley Golf Club.

“We look forward to conducting a full tournament schedule for the Chicago District’s amateur golfers,” Scillia said. “We are excited about the clubs on the 2021 schedule and think they will provide a memorable playing experience for the competitors.”

Designed just over 20 years ago by Raymond Hearn, Mistwood brings the feeling of Scotland to Romeoville with its 20 St. Andrews-style sod-wall bunkers. Hosting the Illinois State Am for the first time, Mistwood last held a CDGA-administered championship in 2018 with the third playing of the CDGA Amateur Four-Ball Championship. The public, links-style course has also welcomed three USGA qualifying events since 2015.

Fixated in the northern part of Illinois, Woodstock’s Bull Valley is considered by many to be one of the most challenging tests in the Chicago District. Consistently ranked on Golf Digest’s “Best Golf Courses in Illinois” list, Bull Valley’s sweeping terrain last hosted the CDGA Am in 2010, when former Illinois State University star Tommy Bliefnick outlasted current Korn Ferry Tour pro Vince India in the 36-hole championship match.

Teeing-off the 2021 slate will be the area’s top players age 25 and older when the 6th CDGA Mid-Amateur Championship heads to Lake Shore Country Club in Glencoe on May 17-19. Just a few weeks later, the seniors will take center stage at Libertyville’s Merit Club to vie for the CDGA Senior Amateur trophy on June 7-10.

Each of the aforementioned age groups get their own opportunity at a state title later in the season, beginning with the Illinois State Mid-Amateur Championship Aug. 23-24 at Bloomington Country Club in the lone championship scheduled to be contested in central Illinois. The top seniors in the state get their shot Sept. 13-15 when they head to The Preserve at Oak Meadows for the Illinois State Senior crown.

Both in their sixth iterations, the CDGA will also conduct a pair of four-ball events. Flossmoor Golf Club will play host to the CDGA Amateur Four-Ball Championship Aug. 9-11 while the CDGA Senior Amateur Four-Ball Championship heads to Ravinia Green Country Club Sept. 27-30 to round-out the championship schedule.

“All of the venues are looking forward to hosting these events and seeing how these great players navigate around their golf courses,” added Scillia.

Monday, April 26 marks the official start of the championship slate with the first CDGA Mid-Am qualifier at Maple Meadows Golf Club in Wood Dale. CDGA-administered USGA contests begin three days later with the U.S. Women’s Open Qualifier at Kishwaukee Country Club.
