|TOMFOHRDE, TENUTA SECURE CDGA AM CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH BERTHS|
|Wednesday, June 23, 2021 - WOODSTOCK, Ill. – Stepping to Bull Valley’s 18th tee, both Brett Tomfohrde (Chicago / Butterfield CC) and Nick Tenuta (Mt. Prospect / Mt. Prospect GC) knew the ensuing shot would play a huge role in determining their CDGA Amateur Championship fate.|
Both competitors navigated the tree-lined fairway and water on the left with 300-plus yard drives, setting them up for routine pars that clinched victories in the Semifinals of the 101st CDGA Amateur Championship Wednesday afternoon at Bull Valley Golf Club. Following Quarterfinal and Semifinal victories on Wednesday, Tomfohrde and Tenuta will square off in the event’s 36-hole title-tilt Thursday beginning at 8 a.m.
Tomfohrde, a 30-year-old who earned top-seed honors following Monday’s 36 holes of qualifying, led Chadd Slutzky (Deer Park / Royal Fox CC) 1 up heading to the finisher. His par clinched a 2-up triumph over his fellow mid-amateur stalwart, with the climactic tee shot being emblematic of his strong ball striking down the stretch.
“My tee shot on 18 was fantastic, with a 3-wood all the way down to the pond,” Tomfohrde said.
“Ball striking and putting were the name of the back nine.”
Tenuta lined up his crucial drive on 18 in a more tenuous position, with his match against Cameron Karney (Crystal Lake / Crystal Lake CC) being tied. Karney could not recover from a wayward drive to the right, making Tenuta’s par enough to clinch the victory.
“That last tee shot was screaming down-wind off the left,” Tenuta, a 22-year-old University of Louisville senior, recalled. “I just knew I needed to hit one good shot and get it in play, because it’s a really hard tee shot. I just swung as hard as I could and went with the flow there.”
Tenuta’s triumph over Karney came after he dispatched of Will Troy (Naperville / Cog Hill G&CC) in the morning Quarterfinal session, 5 and 4. Tenuta credited the success to his game being suited for Bull Valley’s unique and challenging layout, as well as the course management assistant from his caddie/girlfriend – University of Louisville All-American Lauren Hartlage.
“You really can’t overpower the golf course,” Tenuta, a Bull Valley rookie, said. “It’s just not a lot of drivers off the tee. Everyone else is kind of playing back to my yardages. I don’t hit it that far. It makes everyone hit the same clubs and hit the same shots, so that was beneficial to me.
“Without [Lauren] on the bag, I wouldn’t have been able to get many of the yardages,” Tenuta added. “That was so important.”
Alternatively, Tomfohrde has plenty of past experience with Bull Valley, crediting his affinity for the course as being the impetus to play in the CDGA Am for the first time since 2018. Victories over Slutzky in the Semifinals and Charlie Waddell (Chicago / Shoreacres) in the morning Quarterfinal session have set the stage for a potential monumental victory, as no mid-amateur player (age 25 and up) has won the grueling CDGA Am since Andrew Price in 2016.
“It’s a tough challenge and it tests every club in your bag,” Tomfohrde said of Bull Valley. “It would mean a lot to me if I would play well tomorrow and put my name on that trophy.”
