Four birdies allowed Dave Ryan (Taylorville) to become the first player to reach red numbers; a 1-under par 70, to open up a four-shot lead heading into the final round of the 30th Illinois State Senior Amateur Championship. Ryan, a three-time champion of the event, sits at even-par through 36 holes, leading fellow first round co-leader Ted Pecora (Glencoe). Pecora shot a 4-over par 74 on Tuesday.
Two-time State Senior champ Tom Miler (Kewanee) sits third after rounds of 73 and 74, with first round co-leader Tim Sheppard (East Peoria) in fourth at 6-over par.

Birdies were in short supply, producing a logjam atop the leaderboard on day 1 of the 30th Illinois State Senior Amateur Championship at Bloomington Country Club. Three-time champ Dave Ryan (Taylorville), senior circuit rookie Tim Sheppard (East Peoria) and Ted Pecora (Glencoe) each carded 1-over par 72 to own a share of the lead through 18 holes. Two-time champ Tom Miler (Kewanee) and hometown favorite Brad Barker (Bloomington) sit one shot back tied for fourth, as 16 players are within five shots of the lead with two rounds to play.
Slick greens vexed the field, as the combined scoring average of the 74 competitors was 81.499. Only one eagle and 73 birdies were tallied by the field on Monday.
The second round for the Championship is scheduled to tee off at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, after which the field will be cut to the low 35 and ties for the final round on Wednesday. (R1 Results / R2 Tee Times)

LEMONT, Ill. – The 30th Illinois State Senior Amateur Championship heads to central Illinois and Bloomington Country Club, Sept. 12-14. The state’s top amateur golfers age 55 and older will compete in the championship, with a full field of 82 golfers playing 18 holes on Monday and Tuesday. On Wednesday, the low 35 and ties will contest the final 18-hole round to decide who will hoist the Earl R. Liff Trophy.
The State Senior also features a low Super Senior award, with that winner being decided after 36 holes. Eleven players age 65 and older will be eligible to win that title.
